Phazix, a gel designed to help patients who have difficulty swallowing medications, has been made available over-the-counter by Arkray USA.
According to the Company, the thick, slippery gel is placed on a spoon with the medication and consumed in a single swallow; Phazix may be consumed with tablets, capsules, or powders, however it should not be used with liquids or effervescent forms of medications. The product is suitable for patients over the age of 2 who can swallow independently.
Once in the stomach, Phazix is broken down and does not affect the absorption of the medication; it is excreted normally via bile, feces, and urine.
Phazix is supplied in 2.5 ounce tubes (for consumers), as well as 25-count single dose stick packs (for hospital use). The recommended dosage is approximately 5mL. For children 2 to 6 years of age, a maximum of 3 doses per day is recommended; for adults, the gel may be used as often as medications are taken. Phazix is sweetened with sugar and has a vanilla flavor.
