For preschool-aged children, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that clinicians prescribe evidence-based parent- and/or teacher-administered behavior therapy as first-line ADHD treatment. If evidence-based behavioral treatments are not available, clinicians should weigh the risks of starting medication at an early age against the harm of delaying diagnosis and treatment.

Shared Vulnerability Markers in Children With High Familial Risk for Schizophrenia or Bipolar Disorder

Danish investigators found that children who have a parent with schizophrenia should be monitored by clinicians and school professionals for signs of deficits in the areas of language, social responsiveness, and adaptive social functioning, but children with a parent who has bipolar disorder were not found to be at risk for these deficits.
