Oxytocin Levels Predict Social Cognition Impairment in Schizophrenia

Researchers found data that showed endogenous oxytocin levels in plasma predicted social cognition in patients with schizophrenia. Conversely, intranasal treatment with oxytocin showed inconsistent effects in patients with schizophrenia for social and general cognition with a benefit for higher-order social cognition, such as inferential processes, rather than lower-order social cognition, such as perception of social cues.
